Erie North Shore Storm Peewee Majors – 10/25/13 to 10/27/13
Erie North Shore Storm Peewee Majors finalists in Ann Arbor Big Bear Fall Colours Tournament!

10/25/13 – Storm vs. Rochester Rams

Friday October 25 the Storm travelled across the border to Ann Arbor Michigan for the Big Bear Fall Colours tournament. Their first game was an evening game and everyone managed to get to the arena in time for the puck to drop. The first team the Peewee Majors took on was the Rochester Rams, who were competing with a very short bench. The format for the tournament games were three 12 minute periods and the Storm didn’t waste any time getting on the board! Ryan Mucha shot one past the goalie for the first Storm goal of the tournament assisted by Daniel Price. Two minutes later Ethan Litster added another goal unassisted. In the second the Storm continued on their scoring streak with Adrian Ridsdale scoring the next goal assisted by Ethan Litster and Rebecca Misiasz. One minute later Rebecca got one of her own off a pass from Ethan. Shortly after this goal Rochester managed to get on the board with their one and only goal of the game scored while on the powerplay. Ten seconds later the Storm got it back when Daniel Price scored off a pass from Kristian Pelling. Kristian finished off the second period with a goal of his own assisted by Adrian Ridsdale. In the third period the Storm added one more goal with Kristian getting his second of the game with help from Rebecca. The final score for game one was 7-1 with the Storm getting 31 shots on net while Rochester only had 9, giving goalie Connor Axford a nice break! At the end of this first game three stars were selected, two from the Storm and one from Rochester. The two Storm stars were #2 Rebecca Misiasz and #91 Kristian Pelling. Both received a token entitling them to take 5 shots on net in the arena lobby. Congrats on a great job Rebecca and Kristian! Congrats to the entire team on a fantastic win and a great way to start the tournament!

10/26/13 – Storm vs. Novi Firecats

Saturday October 26 the Storm prepared to take on their next opponent, the Novi Firecats. After enjoying breakfast together at the hotel the team headed over to the Arctic Coliseum for game two. Coming off their win from the previous night the Storm had high hopes for another great win. The Firecats proved to be a stronger opponent and got on the board in the first minute of play. The Peewee Majors sprung to action and answered that goal three minutes later when Ethan Litster put one between the pipes assisted by Franco Shaften and Mitchell Renaud. First period ended in a tie and going into the second the Storm peppered the Novi goalie with twelve shots but could only find the back of the net once when Adrian Ridsdale scored with help from Mitchell Renaud and Rebecca Misiasz. The Firecats managed to get two shots past goalie Nathan Jacobs and went into the third period with a one goal lead. The Storm were not ready to give up and played hard in the third with great results. Ethan Litster scored his second of the game tying the score, assisted by Trent Pickle and Rebecca Misiasz. Five minutes before the final buzzer Robbie Brush shot one past the goalie with the game winner assisted by Daniel Price. Goalie Nathan Jacobs and the Storm defense kicked into gear for the remainder of the game allowing the Storm to hold onto the lead and win game two with a score of 4-3. The Storm outshot the Firecats 35-17 in this game and secured a spot in the Sunday finals! Fantastic job Storm!!!

After the game the Storm and their families met up at the hotel and enjoyed a delicious pasta lunch together and then prepared for their second game of the day against another Canadian team, the Oakville Rangers Red team.

10/26/13 – Storm vs. Oakville Rangers Red

Saturday afternoon the Storm returned to the Arctic Coliseum to play the game that didn’t matter. The two previous wins had already determined that the Storm would be playing in the finals on Sunday against this very same team. Oakville was coming into the game as the 2nd rated team in Ontario and were also the defending OMHA champions, so the Storm knew they would have their work cut out for them! With goalie Nate Jacobs defending the net the Storm hit the ice for game three. The team really kicked it up a notch and played strong against Oakville allowing only 4 shots on net in the first, with the Peewee Majors almost matching that at three shots. Halfway through the period Oakville got on the board first scoring a shorthanded goal. The Storm shut them down for the remainder of the first and halfway through the second when Oakville scored two more times giving them a three goal lead going into the third. The Storm had enough and finally solved the Ranger goalie when Mitchell Renaud popped one in the net assisted by Daniel Price. Oakville responded with two more goals but the Storm wasn’t done with them. Two minutes before the final buzzer Austin Marr shot one past the goalie assisted by Robbie Brush and KayCyn Hernandez. The game ended in a 5-2 loss for the Storm but provided the players and coaches with some great insight as to how to handle this team in the championship game on Sunday. The Storm played smart, only drawing two penalties in the game while Oakville went to the box seven times because of their aggressive play. The Storm was outshot 23 -10 but played a fantastic game against this highly rated team. Goalie Nate Jacobs did a fantastic job playing solid in net, and the entire team gave a great performance!

Saturday evening the players and families took over the hotel breakfast lounge to celebrate the team’s success getting into the finals and to watch the World Series on the big screen tv. The hotel had graciously provided us with the adjoining executive meeting room which was quickly converted into a mini-sticks arena. The kids enjoyed playing mini-sticks and were soon joined by the big kids (coach Dylon and coach Brett) who took them on in several heated tournaments until the rug burns on their knees got to be too much! All in all a very fun evening!

10/27/13 – Storm vs. Oakville Rangers Red – Championship Game

Sunday October 27 the Peewee Majors headed back to the Arctic Coliseum for the championship game. The Storm knew they would have to be tough out there after experiencing the Oakville team’s aggressive play in the previous game. Goalie Connor Axford prepared to defend the Storm net and the team hit the ice ready to play. The first period did not go the Storms way as Oakville managed nine shots on net with three scoring. Two of the goals were scored while the Storm were shorthanded on the penalty kill. Going into the second the Storm regrouped and came out strong, not only shutting Oakville down for the period but also getting on the board thanks to a goal by Daniel Price assisted by Franco Shaften. In the third the Storm shut down Oakville again, but try as they might could not get it past the Oakville goalie again, and the game ended in a 3-1 loss for the team. The Storm were not intimidated by this team and drew six of the ten penalties while standing up to them. Goalie Connor Axford was outstanding in net stopping 21 of 24 Oakville shots. The entire team played great and were rewarded with medals depicting the original six hockey arenas as well as a beautiful granite trophy to bring home for display in Harrow arena! Connor Axford was selected as the much deserved team MVP for the game. The coaches and families were all very proud of how great this team played against the defending provincial champions!

Fantastic game Storm! Congratulations on a great tournament!!
