Storm Start Series With Split Against Amherstburg
The Atom AE Storm began the 2nd round of playdowns by splitting the first two games against the Amherstburg Stars. Home ice has yet to be an advantage as the visiting team won both games.

Storm Vs. Amherstburg - January 31/2014
The Storm were hoping to catch Amherstburg a little flat footed knowing they hadn't played a game in 3 weeks while the first round of the playdowns occured. Instead, Amherstburg came out like a well rested team ready to play hard. Mikayla opened the scoring in the first period, taking a nice pass from Aaron and then breaking in alone, beating the goalie with a nice wrist shot. Amherstburg answered back and it was a 1-1 tie after one. Although the intensity wasn't as high as the coaches were looking for, the Storm went ahead in the second when Brady took a pass from the half boards and with a 180 spin, swept a shot in from the slot. In the third period Amhertsburg took  advantage of some sloppy defence and tied the score half way through the frame. Shortly thereafter, Matt broke down the left side and took a shot from the bottom of the face off circle that went bar down giving back a one goal lead to the Storm with 6 minutes to play. Needing help from being down 2 men to injuries and sickness, Tommy picked up his tired team mates the rest of the way by locking the front door to the cage.
Final score - Storm wins 3-2

Amherstburg Vs. Storm - February 1/2014
Aahhh... nothing better on Super Bowl Sunday than driving through a blizzard for some playdown hockey!
Amherstburg came out strong this game determined not to go down 4-0 in points after 2 games and were rewarded by scoring on the games first shift. The Storm played rather uninspired early in the game and trailed   1-0 after the first period. The second period saw better intensity and the Storm evened the score when Matt fired home a shot over the goalies shoulder. Amherstburg took a 2-1 lead in the third by burying a rebound after a scrum in front of the net. The Storm had their chances to tie, but we're denied on a breakaway save and a shot off the post. Penalty trouble ensued in the final minutes and Amherstburg scored two late goals to put the game away.
Final Score - Amherstburg 4 - Storm 1.

Next up - a weekend showdown to decide the series.
Go Storm Go !!
