The Blue Bombers were on the road to Amherstburg for their 8th
game of the season. After a great practice on Friday night, spirits were high
and the team was chomping at the bit to play on Saturday.
As seems to be normal for this team, they started a little
slow allowing the opposition to get a goal early on. Also, normal for this team
is that they battle all game long and this game was no different. The comeback
started with some aggressive defense as Maya fearlessly “bumped” one of
Amherstburg’s better players to stop a rush at mid-ice. She also was a force
moving the puck up the boards in our end. Owen played net for the second time
this year and was very good making several key saves to hold off the opponent.
This led to the team’s confidence growing after the early setback. The line of
Grayson, Maiya and Jaxon was dynamite all game. Lots of heads up hockey had
Amherstburg spinning in circles as the line passed the puck all over the ice. A
sequence of two passes on the rush between Jaxon and Grayson led to two primo
chances in the slot. After a great back check by Blake to stop a breakaway, the
line did open the scoring with Grayson getting one and then Jaxon getting the
second one with some great moves and accurate shots. Maiya almost had her first
(again) at the side of the net, but couldn’t quite get it in. Thomas scored the
team’s third goal on a backhand after a nice rush and better pass by Calvin to set
up his team mate. Early in the third
period, Grayson scored a goal scorers goal after a nice defensive pinch by
Blake to keep the pressure on. Grayson grabbed the puck, made a great shifty
move and beat the goalie with a nice low wrist shot from the slot. Critical to
that play is the very steady play of Jagger who was rock solid defensively
giving Blake the confidence to make a play like that. However, the Bombers got
a bit of a taste of their own medicine. Amherstburg did not give up and pushed
to equalize the game despite some great back checking, especially by Logan who
almost stopped the goal. Matthew also had his nose in the play most of the game
which led to him getting crunched near the end of the game. Much to everyone’s
relief, he was back to his smiling self after the game. Amherstburg did pull
ahead to make it 5-4 and despite a few more chances, the Bombers couldn’t quite
tie it up.
